Micro Desert
This is a 5 gallon desert themed "micro vivarium" that keeps 1.1 Geckonia chazalia. It was constructed of styrofoam that we sculpted with striations and caves for the geckos to climb and hide. Once we cut the foam we added a thin layer of tiling mortar and sprinkled a calcium-based sand on top while it was still wet. There are 3 pieces of the fake rock, the back wall which is flat against the glass, the center angled piece, and the front piece. Each piece of foam is 2" thick, and all of the tunnels are deep enough for the geckos to enter but still be reachable if needed. All of the pieces are removable and have only been anchored through pebbles that were placed in the bottom 1" of the entire tank and then covered with a 1/2" of calcium sand. There is also a small cactus in the back left behind the front piece which is in a pot so it is also easily removable. There is a small under-tank heater on the left half of the tank that the geckos can easily get closer to or farther from by climbing on the layers of foam if needed. There is also a small desert light bar above the tank to simulate daylight for them.
