Leopard tortoises dorm room
Time had come to move the leopard tortoises to a new enclosure, and they're only 2 years old! They are both nearing 2 lbs fast (spring 2010) and are extremely active. Luckily it is summer time here, and we had an empty sun room to give them half of! The new enclosure is 4'x8', a little more than double their enclosure from when they were small. We have given them lots of large boulders and smaller rocks to keep their terrain interesting and a challenge to traverse. They have one UVB spotlight and one red heat lamp in case it gets too cold at night since we will need to keep them in this enclosure until the fall when we are able to create them a permanent room in the basement. We layered a tarp on the very bottom, then sand, then large gravel (too large to swallow!) and randomly placed large boulders on top of all that. This prevents any urine from damaging the floor and ensures the heat from the lights (when needed) will be absorbed into the rocks.
